The Grand Ole Opry held a special event called Opry Goes Dolly at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium on Jan. 19 to celebrate Dolly Parton's 78th birthday. Although Dolly Parton herself was not present, other musicians performed her popular songs as a tribute. However, singer-songwriter Elle King disrupted the performance by appearing on stage while appearing intoxicated. At one point, she openly admitted to being drunk and forgot the lyrics to Dolly Parton's songs during her set.

The following day, the Opry expressed a casual apology to a person who attended the concert through X (previously known as Twitter).

The official Grand Ole Opry account expressed sincere regret and apologized for the language that was used during the second Opry performance last night. They responded to a fan who had expressed disappointment in a tweet, stating that Elle King had ruined the night with her unpleasant, intoxicated, and vulgar performance.

Dear Judas, we would like to express our sincere regret and offer our heartfelt apologies for the inappropriate language that was used during the second Opry performance last night.

Rolling Stone reached out to both the Grand Ole Opry and Elle King for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

The Friday night event at the Ryman Auditorium featured performances by Lauren Alaina, Terri Clark, Tigirlily Gold, Ashley Monroe, Dailey and Vincent, and other artists. The event was broadcast live on 650 AM WSM, deviating from the Opry House, which is the usual venue for the Opry. However, Lauren Alaina decided not to appear at the event.

After engaging in a short exchange with some of the people near the stage, King addressed the audience with an additional statement. "Allow me to share one more thing," King said. "Greetings, my name is Elle King and I am extremely intoxicated." According to a reliable source, Rolling Stone confirmed that WSM, the radio station, received complaints from its listeners regarding King's behavior. However, the exact number of complaints is currently undisclosed.

On TikTok, there are videos showing King's bandmates trying to fix the performance by suggesting that she play one of her own songs instead. In response, King said that she can barely play someone else's song and wanted to see if she could play one of her own. Just moments before, she struggled through singing Parton's song "Marry Me" and expressed that she didn't know the lyrics to these songs in the town they were in and didn't want Dolly to know because it was her birthday.

King also informed the fans that their attempts to obtain a refund would not be fruitful. When one fan suggested that they wouldn't even want their money back, she responded sharply, saying, "That's good because you won't be receiving it."

The singer expressed surprise and disbelief that anyone would have actually paid to attend the event. They were shocked and asked if people really bought tickets for it. It was later revealed that five dollars from each ticket purchase was donated to the Opry Trust Fund as a tribute to Dolly Parton. This fund has been providing assistance to members of the music community in need for over 50 years.
