The Grand Ole Opry has issued an apology for the inappropriate language used by Elle King, who appeared to be intoxicated, during a tribute to Dolly Parton.
On January 19, the Grand Ole Opry held a celebration for Dolly Parton's 78th birthday at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. The event, called Opry Goes Dolly, featured performances by various musicians paying tribute to the country legend. However, Dolly Parton herself was not in attendance. One of the performers, singer-songwriter Elle King, disrupted the performance by appearing on stage visibly drunk. She openly admitted to being intoxicated and even forgot the lyrics to Dolly Parton's songs during her set.
The following day, the Opry expressed a casual apology to a concertgoer through the X platform, previously known as Twitter.
The official Grand Ole Opry account expressed sincere apologies and regret for the language used during the second Opry performance last night. They responded to a fan who was disappointed and had tweeted about Elle King's performance, describing it as terrible, intoxicated, and filled with profanity.
Dear Judas, we would like to express our sincere regret and offer our apologies for the inappropriate language that was used during the second Opry performance last night.
Rolling Stone reached out to both the Grand Ole Opry and Elle King for comment, but their representatives have not responded yet.
The lineup for the Friday night event included artists such as Lauren Alaina, Terri Clark, Tigirlily Gold, Ashley Monroe, Dailey and Vincent, among others. The event took place at the Ryman Auditorium and was broadcast live on 650 AM WSM instead of the usual location, the Opry House. However, Lauren Alaina decided not to participate in the event before it started.
After engaging in a brief exchange with audience members near the stage, King addressed the audience by saying, "I have one more thing to say. Hello, my name is Elle King and I am extremely intoxicated." A reliable source informed Rolling Stone that WSM received complaints from its listeners, although the specific number of complaints is unknown.
In TikTok videos, King's bandmates were seen trying to salvage the performance by suggesting that she play one of her own songs instead. In response, King mentioned that she could barely play someone else's song and wanted to try playing one of her own. Moments before, she struggled through Dolly Parton's "Marry Me" and jokingly mentioned that she didn't know the lyrics well in this particular town, adding that it was Dolly's birthday.

King also informed the fans that their attempt to obtain a refund would not be fruitful. When one person suggested that they wouldn't even want their money back, she responded assertively, saying, "That's great, because you won't be receiving it."
The singer expressed surprise that anyone would have paid to attend the event and questioned why they would do so. She was shocked and couldn't believe it, exclaiming, "Wow. I'm being completely honest here. Did you really buy tickets for this?" A portion of the ticket sales was donated to the Opry Trust Fund, which has been providing assistance to members of the music community in need for over 50 years.
