Grand Ole Opry Issues Apology for Elle King’s Inebriated Performance at Dolly Parton Tribute

  • by

The Grand Ole Opry has issued an apology for the use of inappropriate language by singer Elle King during a tribute to Dolly Parton, as her behavior suggested that she may have been under the influence of alcohol.

On January 19th, the Grand Ole Opry honored Dolly Parton's 78th birthday with a special event at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. Although Dolly Parton was not present, other musicians performed her songs in tribute. However, singer-songwriter Elle King disrupted the performance by appearing on stage visibly intoxicated. At one point, she openly admitted to being drunk and forgot the lyrics to Dolly Parton's songs during her set.

The day after, the Opry expressed a casual apology to a concertgoer on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

The official Grand Ole Opry account expressed sincere regret and offered an apology for the choice of language used during the second Opry performance last night. This response was directed towards a fan who expressed disappointment on Twitter, stating that Elle King's performance was ruined by her terrible, intoxicated, and vulgar behavior.

Hello Judas, we want to express our sincere remorse and offer our apologies for the inappropriate language that was used during the second Opry performance last night.

Rolling Stone reached out for comment from both the Grand Ole Opry and Elle King, but representatives from both parties have not responded yet.

Several artists, including Lauren Alaina, Terri Clark, Tigirlily Gold, Ashley Monroe, Dailey and Vincent, were chosen to perform at a Friday night event. The event was broadcasted live on 650 AM WSM from the Ryman Auditorium, which was a different venue than the usual Opry House. However, Lauren Alaina decided to withdraw from the performance before it started.

After engaging in a brief exchange with some individuals near the stage, King addressed the audience with an additional statement. "Allow me to share something else," King stated. "Greetings, my name is Elle King and I am heavily intoxicated." A reliable source, who is well-informed about the matter, confirmed to Rolling Stone that WSM (presumably a radio station) received complaints from its listeners. However, the precise quantity of complaints remains undisclosed.

On TikTok videos, King's bandmates were seen trying to salvage the performance by suggesting that she play one of her own songs instead. King responded by saying that she could barely play someone else's song and wanted to try one of her own. Just moments before, she struggled through a rendition of Parton's "Marry Me," admitting that she didn't know the lyrics and jokingly asking not to tell Dolly because it was her birthday.

In addition, King informed fans that they would not be able to obtain a refund. When a fan suggested that they wouldn't even want their money back, King replied assertively, saying, "That's good, because you won't be receiving it."

The singer was surprised and couldn't believe that people actually paid to attend the event. They expressed their disbelief by saying, "Wow. I can't believe it. Did you all really buy tickets for this?" A portion of the ticket sales, specifically five dollars, went towards the Opry Trust Fund as a tribute to Dolly Parton.
