On January 19th, the Grand Ole Opry organized a special event at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium to celebrate Dolly Parton's 78th birthday. Despite Dolly Parton's absence, other musicians performed her famous songs as a tribute. However, singer-songwriter Elle King disrupted the performance by appearing on stage clearly intoxicated. At one point, she openly admitted to being drunk and even forgot the lyrics to Dolly Parton's songs during her set.
The following day, the Opry expressed a casual apology to a concertgoer on the social media platform X (previously known as Twitter).
The official Grand Ole Opry account responded to a fan's tweet expressing disappointment about Elle King's performance during the second Opry show of the night. The account expressed sincere regret and apologized for the language that was used during the performance. The fan had described the performance as terrible, intoxicated, and filled with profanity.
Hello Judas, we want to express our sincere regret and offer our apologies for the use of inappropriate language during the second Opry performance last night.
Rolling Stone reached out to both the Grand Ole Opry and Elle King for comment, but their representatives have not responded yet.
The Friday night event featured performances by Lauren Alaina, Terri Clark, Tigirlily Gold, Ashley Monroe, Dailey and Vincent, and other artists. Instead of the usual venue at the Opry House, the shows were broadcast live on 650 AM WSM from the Ryman Auditorium. However, Lauren Alaina withdrew from the appearance before it started.
After engaging in a brief exchange with the individuals seated near the stage, King addressed the audience. She introduced herself as Elle King and openly admitted to being heavily intoxicated. According to a reliable source, Rolling Stone magazine confirmed that WSM received complaints from its listeners, although the specific number of complaints remains unknown.
On TikTok, there are videos showing King's bandmates trying to fix the performance by suggesting that she play one of her own songs instead. In response, she says that she can barely play someone else's song and wants to try playing one of her own. Just before this, she struggled while singing Dolly Parton's "Marry Me" and admitted that she doesn't know the lyrics well, adding that it's embarrassing because it's Dolly Parton's birthday.

King further informed the fans that any attempt to obtain a refund would be futile. In response to a fan's suggestion that they wouldn't even want their money back, King firmly replied that they shouldn't expect to receive it.
The singer expressed astonishment that anyone would have paid to attend the event, questioning why they would spend money on it. A portion of the ticket sales was donated to the Opry Trust Fund, which has been providing assistance to members of the music community in need for over 50 years.
