Grand Ole Opry Issues Apology for Elle King’s Inebriated Performance at Dolly Parton Tribute

  • by

The Grand Ole Opry has issued an apology regarding Elle King's use of inappropriate language during a Dolly Parton tribute. It appeared that the singer may have been intoxicated during the performance.

The Grand Ole Opry marked Dolly Parton's 78th birthday with a special event at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium on January 19th. Although Dolly Parton herself was not present, other musicians performed her hits as a tribute. However, singer-songwriter Elle King disrupted the performance by appearing on stage visibly intoxicated. At one point, she openly admitted to being drunk and forgot the lyrics to Dolly Parton's songs during her set.

The following day, the Opry expressed regret to a concertgoer on X (previously known as Twitter) through an informal apology.

The official Grand Ole Opry account responded to a fan who expressed disappointment over Elle King's performance at the second Opry show of the night. The account expressed regret and apologized for the language used during the performance. The fan had described the performance as horrible, drunk, and profane.

Hello Judas, we want to express our sincere regret and offer our apologies for the inappropriate language that was used during the second Opry performance last night.

Rolling Stone reached out for comment to both the Grand Ole Opry and Elle King, but their representatives have not yet responded.

Lauren Alaina, Terri Clark, Tigirlily Gold, Ashley Monroe, Dailey and Vincent, and several other artists were chosen to perform at the Friday night event. The event took place at the Ryman Auditorium and was broadcast live on 650 AM WSM instead of the usual venue, the Opry House. However, Lauren Alaina canceled her appearance before the event started.

After engaging in a brief exchange with the people near the stage, King addressed the audience and added, "There's something else I want to share with you." She introduced herself as Elle King and admitted to being heavily intoxicated. According to a reliable insider, Rolling Stone confirmed that WSM received some complaints from its listeners. However, the specific quantity of complaints is currently unknown.

On TikTok videos, King's bandmates can be observed trying to salvage the performance by suggesting that she play one of her own songs instead. In response, she mentioned that she's not confident in playing someone else's song and wanted to try one of her own. Just moments before, she struggled through Parton's "Marry Me," admitting that she didn't know the lyrics and jokingly asked not to inform Dolly because it was her birthday.
