6 Controversial Moments: Stars Banned by the Grand Ole Opry

  • by

The Grand Ole Opry is widely regarded as the most respected stage in country music. When artists receive their initial invitation to perform at this prestigious venue, and later when they become official members, it is often considered a significant milestone in their career.

Nevertheless, it is not uncommon for country music artists to experience some difficulties in their association with the Opry over the course of their careers. Throughout the years, several performers have been requested to depart from the stage due to various reasons. This can be because they have disregarded the venue's unwritten rules of behavior or because they have not fulfilled the official requirements for becoming a member.

At the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, there was a tribute show called Opry Goes Dolly, which was held to celebrate Dolly Parton's 78th birthday in 2024. However, one of the performers, Elle King, caused a lot of anger and shock when she appeared on stage clearly intoxicated. She openly admitted to the audience that she was heavily intoxicated, engaged in mildly confrontational conversations with concert attendees, and even forgot the lyrics to Dolly Parton's song "Marry Me."

The venue expressed regret to those who were upset by King's choice of words. However, numerous fans of the Opry took to social media to demand an apology directly from King and even suggested that her actions should result in her being banned from performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage.

Throughout the years, the Opry has witnessed multiple occasions where artists were prohibited from performing. However, is King's conduct truly deserving of such a drastic measure? If we examine a few cases from the early years of the venue, all of which occurred in 1973 or earlier, the clear response is that it is indeed possible.

In 1973, Johnny Cash was prohibited from performing at the Opry after an intense show where he used a microphone stand to destroy stage lights. Alcohol played a significant role in this incident. Hank Williams, who is considered one of the most well-known artists banned from the Opry, lost his membership due to his chronic drunkenness and lack of dependability. Jerry Lee Lewis, on the other hand, was removed from the Opry stage for various reasons, one of which included him using explicit language on live air.

However, it is important to note that there is only one case of a singer being permanently banned from the Opry, and this decision was not made by the venue itself. Therefore, it is probable that even if King's actions justify a temporary absence from performing at the Opry, it is unlikely to have a lasting impact on her ability to play at the Grand Ole Opry.
