6 Country Stars Who Were Banned from the Grand Ole Opry: A Look at Their Infamous Behavior

  • by

The Grand Ole Opry is widely considered as the most esteemed stage in country music. When artists receive their initial invitation to perform at this esteemed venue, and subsequently earn official membership, it is often regarded as one of the most significant milestones in their career.

Nevertheless, not all country music stars have a consistently positive relationship with the Opry throughout their entire career. Throughout the years, numerous performers have been requested to exit the stage for various reasons. These reasons may include breaching the venue's unwritten behavioral guidelines or not meeting the official requirements for membership.

At the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, there was a tribute show called Opry Goes Dolly, which was organized to celebrate Dolly Parton's 78th birthday in 2024. However, during the performance, Elle King, one of the performers, caused a lot of anger and upset. She appeared on stage visibly intoxicated, openly admitting that she was extremely drunk. She engaged in confrontational conversations with the audience and even forgot the lyrics to Dolly Parton's song "Marry Me."

The establishment offered an apology to individuals who were offended by the language used by King. However, numerous supporters of the Opry expressed on social media that they believed an apology should be issued by King herself. Some even went as far as suggesting that her actions were deserving of a ban from performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage.

Throughout the years, there have been multiple cases where artists were banned from performing at the Opry. However, is King's actions truly deserving of such a drastic measure? By examining a few instances from the venue's earlier years, specifically from 1973 or before, it becomes evident that it is indeed a possibility.

Johnny Cash was not allowed to perform at the Opry anymore after a memorable show in 1973, where he destroyed stage lights using a microphone stand. Alcohol played a significant role in this incident. Hank Williams, a well-known artist, also faced a ban from the Opry due to his consistent drunkenness and inability to be dependable. Jerry Lee Lewis, on the other hand, was removed from the Opry stage for various reasons, including his use of explicit language during a live broadcast.

However, it is important to note that there is only one case of a singer being permanently banned from the Opry, and this decision was not made by the venue itself to maintain the ban indefinitely. Therefore, it is probable that even if King's actions merit a temporary suspension from performing at the Opry, it will not have a lasting impact on her ability to play at the Grand Ole Opry.
