Banned from the Grand Ole Opry: The Controversial Artists and Their Infamous Incidents

  • by

The Grand Ole Opry is widely considered as the most respected stage in country music. For musicians, receiving an invitation to perform at this prestigious venue is a significant milestone in their career and becoming an official member is an even greater honor.

However, not all country music stars have a consistently positive relationship with the Opry throughout their entire career. Throughout the years, several performers have been removed from the stage for various reasons. This could be due to their behavior not aligning with the venue's unwritten code of conduct, or for not meeting the official membership expectations.

At the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, there was a tribute show called "Opry Goes Dolly" in honor of Dolly Parton's 78th birthday in 2024. However, during the show, performer Elle King caused controversy by appearing on stage visibly intoxicated. She openly admitted to being heavily intoxicated and engaged in confrontational exchanges with the audience. Additionally, she forgot the lyrics to Dolly Parton's song "Marry Me."

The establishment expressed regret to those who were upset by the language used by King. However, numerous supporters of the Opry took to social media to demand that King herself issue an apology and even suggested that her actions were severe enough to justify being prohibited from performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage.

Throughout the years, there have been multiple cases of artists being banned from the Opry. However, is King's behavior truly deserving of such a drastic measure? By examining a few instances from the venue's early history, all occurring in 1973 or before, it becomes clear that it is indeed a possible outcome.

Following a memorable performance in 1973, Johnny Cash was barred from the Opry for destroying stage lights using a microphone stand. Alcohol played a significant role in this incident. Hank Williams, a well-known artist, also faced a ban from the Opry due to his excessive drinking and lack of dependability. Meanwhile, Jerry Lee Lewis was removed from the Opry stage for various reasons, including using profanity during a live broadcast.

However, it is important to note that there is only one instance of a singer being completely and permanently banned from the Opry, and this decision was not made by the venue itself. Therefore, it is probable that even if King's actions call for a temporary absence from the Opry stage, it is unlikely to have lasting consequences on her ability to perform at the Grand Ole Opry.
