Behind the Ban: The Grand Ole Opry’s Controversial History with Banned Stars

  • by

The Grand Ole Opry is widely considered to be the most respected stage in country music. It holds great significance for artists who receive an invitation to perform there, and becoming an official member is a major milestone in their career.

Nevertheless, it is not uncommon for some country stars to face challenges in their relationship with the Opry over the course of their careers. Throughout the years, several artists have been requested to leave the stage due to various reasons. These may include their violation of the venue's unwritten rules of behavior or their failure to meet the official criteria for membership.

At the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, there was a tribute show called Opry Goes Dolly, which was organized to celebrate Dolly Parton's 78th birthday in 2024. However, during the performance, one of the performers named Elle King caused controversy by appearing on stage while clearly intoxicated. She openly admitted to being heavily intoxicated, engaged in mildly confrontational exchanges with the audience, and even forgot the lyrics to Dolly Parton's song "Marry Me."

The establishment expressed regret to those who were upset by King's choice of words. However, numerous supporters of the Opry on social media argued that King should be the one to apologize and that her actions were severe enough to justify a ban from performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage.

Throughout the years, there have been multiple cases of artists being banned from performing at the Opry. However, is King's conduct truly deserving of such a drastic measure? If we examine a few incidents that took place in the early years of the venue, particularly in 1973 or before, the clear response is that it is a possibility.

Johnny Cash was prohibited from performing at the Opry following a memorable concert in 1973, during which he destroyed stage lights using a microphone stand. Alcohol played a significant role in this incident. Hank Williams, known as one of the most renowned artists banned from the Opry, lost his membership due to his consistent drunkenness and unreliability. Similarly, Jerry Lee Lewis was expelled from the Opry stage for various reasons, including the inappropriate use of explicit language during a live broadcast.

However, it is important to note that there is only one singer who has been permanently banned from the Opry, and this decision was not made by the venue itself. Therefore, it is probable that even if King's actions require her to take a break from performing at the Opry, it will not significantly impact her future opportunities to play at the Grand Ole Opry.
