Behind the Curtain: The Controversial Bans of 6 Grand Ole Opry Stars and Their Infamous Exits

  • by

The Grand Ole Opry is widely considered as the most respected stage in country music. It holds great significance for artists who receive an invitation to perform there, as well as those who become official members. These moments are often cherished as some of the most memorable in their career.

Despite being a country star, not all artists have a consistently positive connection with the Opry throughout their entire career. Throughout the years, there have been instances where performers were requested to leave the stage due to various reasons. These reasons could range from breaching the venue's unwritten rules of behavior to not meeting the official standards for membership.

At the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, there was a tribute show called Opry Goes Dolly, which was organized to celebrate Dolly Parton's 78th birthday in 2024. However, one of the performers named Elle King caused a lot of anger and controversy during the show. She appeared on stage visibly intoxicated, openly admitting that she was very drunk. Elle King engaged in confrontational conversations with the audience and even forgot the lyrics to Dolly Parton's song "Marry Me."

The place where the incident occurred expressed regret to the individuals who were upset by King's choice of words. However, numerous fans of the Opry took to social media to express their belief that King should be the one to apologize and suggested that her actions were severe enough to result in a ban from performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage.

Throughout the years, there have been multiple occurrences of artists being banned from performing at the Opry. However, is King's conduct truly deserving of such a drastic measure? When examining various incidents that took place at the venue before 1973, it becomes apparent that the answer to that question is likely yes.

In 1973, Johnny Cash was prohibited from performing at the Opry due to his destructive behavior during a show where he used a microphone stand to smash stage lights. Alcohol played a significant role in this incident. Hank Williams, who is widely known for being banned from the Opry, lost his membership due to his excessive drinking and lack of reliability. Similarly, Jerry Lee Lewis was removed from the Opry stage for various offenses, one of which included using explicit language on live air.

However, it is important to note that there is only one instance of a singer being permanently banned from the Opry, and this decision was not made by the venue itself. Therefore, it is probable that even if King's actions justify a temporary absence from the Opry stage, it is unlikely to significantly impact her future ability to perform at the Grand Ole Opry.
