Controversial Country: A Look at the 6 Stars Banned by the Grand Ole Opry

  • by

The Grand Ole Opry is widely considered to be the most esteemed platform in country music. For artists, receiving an invitation to perform or becoming an official member at this iconic venue is a significant milestone in their career.

Nevertheless, it is not uncommon for country music artists to experience some challenges in their relationship with the Opry over the course of their careers. Throughout the years, several performers have been requested to step down from performing at the Opry due to various reasons. This could be attributed to their failure to adhere to the venue's unwritten rules of behavior or their inability to meet the official membership requirements.

At a special event called Opry Goes Dolly, held at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville to celebrate Dolly Parton's 78th birthday in 2024, there was a controversial incident involving performer Elle King. She appeared on stage visibly intoxicated, openly admitting to being heavily drunk. During her performance, she engaged in confrontational exchanges with members of the audience and even forgot the lyrics to Dolly Parton's song "Marry Me." This caused a lot of outrage among the attendees.

The establishment expressed regret to those who were upset by King's choice of words. However, numerous supporters of the Opry on social media believe that King should be the one to apologize and some even think that her actions justify her being banned from performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage.

Throughout the years, the Opry has seen numerous cases of artists being banned. However, the question arises whether King's actions truly justify such a drastic measure. Examining instances from the venue's earlier years, specifically those prior to 1973, it becomes evident that the answer is potentially yes.

Johnny Cash was prohibited from performing at the Opry following a memorable and intense show in 1973. During this performance, he destroyed stage lights using a microphone stand, and the incident was heavily influenced by alcohol. Hank Williams, who is widely recognized as one of the Opry's most renowned banned artists, lost his membership due to his excessive drinking and lack of reliability. Additionally, Jerry Lee Lewis was removed from the Opry stage for various offenses, including the use of profanity during a live broadcast.

However, it is important to note that there is only one instance where a singer was banned from the Opry permanently and without any chance of reversal. In this case, it was not the decision of the venue to impose such a ban indefinitely. Therefore, it is probable that even if King's actions lead to a temporary absence from performing at the Opry, it will not have lasting consequences on her future ability to play at the Grand Ole Opry.
