From Johnny Cash to Elle King: Exploring the Controversial Bans of Country Stars at the Grand Ole Opry

  • by

The Grand Ole Opry is widely considered as the most respected stage in country music. For musicians, receiving an invitation to perform at this prestigious venue, and eventually becoming an official member, is often regarded as a significant milestone in their career.

Nevertheless, it is important to note that not all country music stars have a consistently positive and harmonious association with the Opry throughout their entire professional journey. Throughout the years, several artists have been requested to exit the stage for various reasons. These reasons may include breaching the unspoken behavioral guidelines set by the venue or not meeting the official requirements for becoming a member.

At a tribute show called Opry Goes Dolly, which was held at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium to celebrate Dolly Parton's 78th birthday in 2024, there was a controversial incident involving performer Elle King. She caused a lot of anger and upset when she appeared on stage visibly intoxicated, openly admitting that she was heavily intoxicated. She engaged in a slightly confrontational conversation with the audience and even forgot the lyrics to Dolly Parton's song "Marry Me."

The location expressed regret to individuals who were upset by King's words. However, numerous supporters of the Opry on social media believed that King should be the one apologizing and that her actions deserved a prohibition from performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage.

Throughout the years, the Opry has banned multiple artists, but is King's behavior deserving of such a drastic action? By examining past incidents that occurred in 1973 or earlier, it becomes evident that it is indeed a possibility.

In 1973, Johnny Cash was forbidden from performing at the Opry due to a memorable concert where he destroyed stage lights using a microphone stand. Alcohol played a significant role in that incident. Hank Williams, who is widely recognized as one of the Opry's most well-known banned artists, lost his membership because of his heavy drinking and lack of dependability. Furthermore, Jerry Lee Lewis was removed from the Opry stage for various offenses, including uttering an expletive during a live broadcast.

However, it is important to note that there is only one instance where a singer was permanently and fully banned from the Opry, and this decision was not made by the venue itself. Therefore, it is probable that even if King's actions justify a temporary absence from the Opry stage, it is unlikely to have a lasting impact on her ability to perform at the Grand Ole Opry.
