The Banned and the Booted: 6 Stars Who Were Kicked Off the Grand Ole Opry

  • by

The Grand Ole Opry is widely considered as the most respected platform for country music. For artists, receiving an invitation to perform at this esteemed venue, and later being granted official membership, is a significant milestone in their career.

Nevertheless, it is not uncommon for country music stars to have a somewhat strained or negative association with the Opry at some point in their careers. Throughout the years, several musicians have been requested to leave the stage due to various reasons, such as not adhering to the unwritten rules of behavior expected at the venue or not meeting the official criteria for membership.

At a special event called Opry Goes Dolly, which was organized to celebrate Dolly Parton's 78th birthday in 2024 at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, there was a controversial incident involving performer Elle King. King appeared on stage visibly intoxicated, openly admitting her drunken state to the audience. She engaged in confrontational exchanges with concert attendees and even forgot the lyrics to Parton's song "Marry Me." This incident sparked widespread outrage.

The place where the incident took place expressed regret to those who were upset by King's choice of words. However, numerous fans of the Opry expressed on social media that they believed King should be the one to apologize and that her actions were severe enough to be banned from performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage.

Throughout the years, there have been numerous cases where artists were banned from performing at the Opry. However, the question arises whether King's actions justify such a drastic measure. By examining incidents that occurred in the venue's early years, specifically before 1973, it becomes evident that it is indeed a possibility.

Johnny Cash was prohibited from performing at the Opry after a highly energetic show in 1973, during which he destroyed stage lights using a microphone stand. Alcohol played a significant role in causing this incident. Hank Williams, who is widely known as the most prominent artist banned from the Opry, had his membership revoked due to his consistent drunkenness and untrustworthiness. Jerry Lee Lewis, on the other hand, was removed from the Opry stage for various reasons, including his use of explicit language live on air.

However, it is important to note that there is only one instance of a singer being permanently banned from the Opry, and it was not the decision of the venue to impose this lifelong ban. Therefore, it is probable that even if King's actions justify a temporary absence from the Opry stage, it is unlikely to have a lasting impact on her ability to perform at the Grand Ole Opry.
