The Controversial History of Artist Bans at the Grand Ole Opry: 6 Stars Who Were Booted from the Stage

  • by

The Grand Ole Opry is widely regarded as the most respected stage in country music. For artists, receiving an invitation to perform at this esteemed venue, and eventually gaining official membership, is often considered a significant milestone in their career.

Nevertheless, it is not uncommon for country music stars to have a somewhat turbulent association with the Opry throughout their entire career. Throughout the years, there have been instances where performers have been requested to step down from the stage due to various reasons. These reasons could range from disregarding the venue's unwritten rules of conduct to not meeting the official membership requirements.

At Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, there was a tribute show called Opry Goes Dolly, which honored Dolly Parton on her 78th birthday in 2024. However, during the show, there was a controversial incident involving performer Elle King. She appeared on stage visibly intoxicated, openly admitted to being heavily drunk, engaged in somewhat confrontational exchanges with the audience, and even forgot the lyrics to Dolly Parton's song "Marry Me." This behavior caused a lot of outrage among the attendees.

The venue expressed regret to those who were upset by King's choice of words. However, numerous fans of the Opry took to social media to assert that King should be the one to apologize and that her actions were severe enough to be banned from performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage.

Throughout the years, there have been multiple occasions where artists were banned from performing at the Opry. However, is King's conduct truly deserving of such a drastic measure? By examining a few instances from the venue's early history, all occurring before 1973, it becomes evident that it is indeed a possibility.

Johnny Cash was prohibited from performing at the Opry following a memorable performance in 1973. During that show, he destroyed stage lights using a microphone stand, and the incident was heavily influenced by his consumption of alcohol. Hank Williams, who is widely recognized as one of the Opry's most well-known banned artists, had his membership revoked due to his consistent drunken behavior and lack of reliability. Additionally, Jerry Lee Lewis was expelled from the Opry stage for various transgressions, including using explicit language on live broadcast.

However, it is important to note that there is only one singer who has been permanently and completely banned from performing at the Opry, and this decision was not made by the venue itself. Therefore, it is probable that even if King's actions justify a temporary suspension from the Opry stage, it is unlikely to have any lasting impact on her future ability to perform at the Grand Ole Opry.
