The Infamous Six: Exploring the Stars Banned by the Grand Ole Opry and the Reasons Behind Their Ousting

  • by

The Grand Ole Opry is widely regarded as the most prestigious stage in country music. For artists, receiving an invitation to perform at this esteemed venue, and eventually earning official membership, is often considered a significant milestone in their career.

Nevertheless, it is not uncommon for country musicians to face challenges in their association with the Opry over the course of their careers. Throughout the years, several artists have been requested to step down from performing at the venue due to various reasons. These reasons may include breaching the unwritten standards of behavior set by the Opry or not meeting the official requirements for membership.

At a tribute show called Opry Goes Dolly, held at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium to celebrate Dolly Parton's 78th birthday in 2024, performer Elle King caused controversy. She appeared on stage clearly intoxicated, confessed to the audience that she was extremely drunk, engaged in friendly arguments with the concert attendees, and even forgot the lyrics to Parton's song "Marry Me."

The establishment expressed regret to those who were upset by King's choice of words. However, numerous supporters of the Opry on social media argued that King should be the one to apologize and some even believed that her actions were severe enough to be banned from performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage.

Throughout the years, the Opry has experienced multiple cases of artist bans. However, is King's conduct truly deserving of such a drastic measure? By examining past incidents at the venue, specifically those that occurred in 1973 or before, it becomes evident that his behavior could very well justify such action.

In 1973, Johnny Cash was prohibited from performing at the Opry due to a highly energetic show where he destroyed stage lights using a microphone stand, and alcohol played a significant role in that incident. Hank Williams, who is widely known as the most famous banned artist from the Opry, had his membership revoked due to his excessive drinking and lack of dependability. Similarly, Jerry Lee Lewis was removed from the Opry stage for various reasons, including using profanity on live air.

However, it is important to note that there is only one instance of a singer being permanently banned from the Opry, and this decision was not made by the venue itself. Therefore, it is probable that even if King's actions warrant a temporary suspension from performing at the Opry, it will not have a lasting impact on her ability to play at the Grand Ole Opry.
