PETA is advocating for Punxsutawney Phil to step down from his yearly role of predicting the weather in the United States. They propose replacing him with a giant coin.
A group that has been known for advocating for animal rights has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, who is the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. In this letter, the group has requested that instead of using the famous groundhog for the Groundhog Day holiday on February 2nd, they should use a giant coin instead.
PETA expressed that he lacks expertise in meteorology and should not be continually used solely for generating tourism revenue, as he deserves more respect and consideration.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they should use a persimmon tree to forecast the weather, rather than relying on Phil.
Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.
Newkirk from PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by suggesting that Phil and his companion be sent to a trustworthy sanctuary. This would allow Phil to live without any concerns, free from being handled and spun around, and finally be able to engage in the natural behaviors that he has been deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure.
For over a century, people from both the local community and visitors from distant places have been coming to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the annual event of Phil, a small furry creature, coming out of his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it indicates whether there will be six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
The film Groundhog Day, which was released in 1993, features Bill Murray playing the role of a weatherman who is unhappy and trapped in a repeating cycle of time.
