PETA Calls for Retirement of Punxsutawney Phil: Giant Coin to Replace Groundhog’s Weather Predictions

  • by

The organization PETA is advocating for Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the U.S., to step down from his role, as they believe he is being exploited. PETA suggests that a giant coin should replace him in this tradition.

The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, who is the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd. This request has sparked controversy.

According to PETA's statement, the individual in question is not a professional meteorologist. PETA believes that this person should not be taken advantage of annually for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA approached the club in 2022 and suggested the idea of using a persimmon tree as a replacement for Phil in predicting the weather.

During that time, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk mentioned that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable about weather patterns.

According to Newkirk from PETA, the organization is aiming to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by allowing Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. In this sanctuary, Phil would be able to live without any concerns, free from being handled and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure.

For over a century, people from near and far have been visiting Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the annual event of Phil, a small, furry creature, coming out of his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it predicts either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
