PETA Calls for Retirement of Punxsutawney Phil: Should a Giant Coin Replace the Groundhog?

  • by

PETA is advocating for Punxsutawney Phil to step down from his yearly role of predicting the weather in the United States, as they believe he is being exploited. They suggest replacing him with a large coin instead.

The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, who is the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. In this letter, they have asked the club to substitute the well-known groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.

According to PETA, he is not a professional in the field of meteorology, and it is unjust to continuously use him for financial gain related to tourism.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the idea of using a persimmon tree to forecast the weather instead of relying on Phil.

During that time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, expressed that Phil is skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts. However, she mentioned that Phil is not knowledgeable in the field of meteorology.

PETA is aiming to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by advocating for Phil and his companion to be transferred to a reputable sanctuary. This would allow them to live free from concerns, without being handled and spun around, and enable them to engage in their natural behaviors that are currently restricted in their Plexiglas enclosure, according to Newkirk.

For over a century, people from both the local community and visitors from distant places have been making their way to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. They gather there to witness the annual event where a small and furry creature named Phil leaves his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it predicts either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.

In 1993, a film called Groundhog Day was released. It featured Bill Murray in the role of a frustrated weatherman who finds himself trapped in a repetitive cycle of time.
