PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, who is currently responsible for predicting the weather in the United States every year.
A letter was sent to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, by an animal rights group. The group, known for their controversial views, suggested that instead of using the usual groundhog, a large coin should be used for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that he does not have expertise in meteorology and should not be used solely for generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the use of a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.
PETA president Ingrid Newkirk stated that Phil is highly skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and thriving in his natural habitat rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.
According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration by allowing Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. In this sanctuary, Phil can live without concerns, without being handled and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure.
