Garth Brooks and the Unconventional Batting Stance: How the Country Star Influenced Craig Counsell’s Hitting Technique

  • by

Garth Brooks, the famous country singer, had an impact on an MLB hitter's batting stance in the past. The current manager of the Chicago Cubs, Craig Counsell, had an impressive career as a professional baseball player for 12 years, starting in 1995 and ending in 2007.

Counsell was famous for his unique way of holding the bat while batting. He would raise it high up in the air, and the reasons behind this stance remained a mystery to everyone. He never provided any explanation for it either.

Upon being hired as the manager for the Chicago Cubs, Counsell made an appearance at the 2024 Cubs Convention. During the event, an individual inquired about the reason behind his habit of holding the bat at a high position in the air.

He attributes the fault to Garth Brooks.

Counsell clarifies that during his time at spring training with the Los Angeles Dodgers, he wasn't skilled at hitting and struggled to achieve any successful hits.

During spring training, I struck a powerful hit towards the left field. Excitedly, I thought to myself, "Finally, my first base hit!" With determination, I lowered my head and sprinted towards first base. The crowd erupted in wild cheers, creating a thrilling atmosphere. However, as I glanced up, I was stunned to see Garth Brooks, the renowned musician, making an incredible diving catch in left field, which unfortunately continued my streak of not getting any hits in the game, as I remained 0-4.

The story presented at the press conference was found amusing by the attendees.

The following day, I was set free. I engaged in a self-reflection and asked myself, "Why am I not able to achieve any successes?" This inquiry prompted me to raise my hands high up in the air, and surprisingly, it made a positive difference in my situation.

Garth Brooks is the one I hold responsible for my terrible batting stance.

Brooks, a renowned figure in the music industry, had a passion for sports during his childhood. He actively participated in baseball and track and field events. Despite having three opportunities to join the New York Mets, he unfortunately did not secure a spot on the team.
