Garth Brooks, a country music artist, had the ability to influence an MLB hitter to alter his batting stance. Craig Counsell, the current manager of the Chicago Cubs, was a highly skilled hitter during his time in the major leagues, playing from 1995 to 2007.
Counsell gained a reputation for his unique and unconventional way of holding the bat while batting. He would raise it high up in the air, puzzling everyone as to the reason behind this technique. Surprisingly, Counsell never provided any explanation for his unusual stance.
After being appointed as the manager of the Chicago Cubs, Counsell participated in the 2024 Cubs Convention, during which he was questioned about the reason behind his previous habit of holding the bat at a high position in the air.
He attributes the responsibility to Garth Brooks.
Counsell clarifies that during his time at spring training with the Los Angeles Dodgers, he was not skilled as a hitter and struggled to make any successful hits.
During a spring training game, I successfully hit a strong hit towards the left field. I felt a surge of excitement as I thought this would be my first base hit. With my head down, I quickly dashed towards first base. The crowd erupted in wild cheers, adding to my thrill. However, when I glanced up, I was taken aback to see that Garth Brooks, unexpectedly, made a remarkable diving catch in left field, preventing me from breaking my 0-4 streak.
The attendees at the media event found this narrative to be extremely amusing.
The day after, I was set free. I had a conversation with myself, questioning why I couldn't achieve any successful hits. This contemplation prompted me to raise my hands high up in the air, and surprisingly, it made a difference!

He participated in baseball and track and field, showcasing his sporting abilities. Although he had the opportunity to be part of the New York Mets on three separate occasions, he was unfortunately unable to secure a place on the team
