Garth Brooks, the famous country singer, had an interesting encounter with a former MLB player who is now the manager of the Chicago Cubs, Craig Counsell. Counsell, who had a successful career as a professional baseball player from 1995 to 2007, was influenced by Brooks to change his batting stance.
Counsell gained recognition for his unusual approach to batting, as he would hold his bat high above the ground without providing any explanation for his technique.
After Counsell was appointed as the manager of the Chicago Cubs, he participated in the 2024 Cubs Convention. During the event, someone finally inquired about the reason behind his practice of holding the bat at a high position in the air.
He attributes the responsibility to Garth Brooks.
Counsell elaborates on his experience as a baseball player, specifically as a hitter. During his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers, he participated in spring training with the team but struggled to achieve successful hits.
During a spring training game, I hit a powerful hit towards the left field. Excitedly, I thought to myself, "Finally! My first successful hit!" Without wasting any time, I lowered my head and sprinted towards first base. The crowd erupted with wild cheers and applause. However, when I glanced up, I was shocked to see that Garth Brooks had made an incredible diving catch in left field, preventing me from breaking my 0-4 streak.
The people attending the press conference found this story incredibly funny.
The following day, I was set free. I had a conversation with myself, questioning why I couldn't achieve any successful hits. This self-reflection prompted me to raise my hands high up in the air, and surprisingly, it made a positive difference.
I hold Garth Brooks responsible for a terrible position for batting.
Brooks, who is considered one of the most influential figures in the music industry, had a passion for sports during his childhood. He actively participated in baseball and was also involved in track and field events. Despite having three opportunities to join the New York Mets, unfortunately, he was not able to secure a spot on the team.
