Garth Brooks had the ability to influence an MLB hitter's batting stance in the past. Craig Counsell, the current manager of the Chicago Cubs, had a remarkable career as a professional baseball player from 1995 to 2007.
Counsell gained a reputation for his unique and non-traditional batting stance, in which he held his bat significantly high above the ground. The reason behind this unconventional technique remained a mystery to everyone as Counsell never provided any explanation for it.
After being appointed as the manager for the Chicago Cubs, Counsell participated in the 2024 Cubs Convention. During the event, someone finally inquired about the reason behind his previous habit of holding the bat at a high position in the air.
He attributes the responsibility to Garth Brooks.
Counsell clarifies that during his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers at spring training, he struggled as a hitter and was unable to achieve any hits.
During a spring training game, I smacked a strong hit towards the left field. Excitement rushed through me as I thought, "Finally! My first successful hit!" Determined, I lowered my head and sprinted towards first base. The crowd erupted in wild cheers, their enthusiasm filling the air. However, when I glanced up, I was stunned to see Garth Brooks, the country singer, making a remarkable diving catch in left field. His impressive play prevented me from breaking my 0-4 streak.
The people present at the press conference found this story to be extremely funny.
The following day, I was set free. I engaged in a conversation with myself, questioning why I was unable to achieve any successful hits. This self-reflection prompted me to raise my hands high in the air, and surprisingly, it made a positive difference.
I hold Garth Brooks responsible for my terrible batting stance.
Brooks, who is considered as one of the most prominent figures in music history, had a passion for sports during his childhood. He actively participated in baseball and track and field. Although he had three opportunities to join the New York Mets, he was unable to secure a spot on the team.
