Garth Brooks’ Unexpected Influence: How He Changed a MLB Hitter’s Batting Stance

  • by

Garth Brooks once had an impact on an MLB player's batting stance. Craig Counsell, who is now the manager of the Chicago Cubs, had a successful career as a professional baseball player from 1995 to 2007.

Counsell had a unique batting stance which was quite unconventional. He would hold his bat high up in the air, and the reason behind this peculiar stance remained a mystery to everyone. Surprisingly, Counsell never provided any explanation for his unusual batting technique.

After Counsell was appointed as the manager of the Chicago Cubs, he participated in the 2024 Cubs Convention. During the event, an individual finally inquired about the reason behind his previous practice of holding the bat at a higher position in the air.

He attributes the responsibility to Garth Brooks.

Counsell clarifies that during his time in spring training with the Los Angeles Dodgers, he struggled as a hitter and was not performing well in terms of getting hits.

During a spring training game, I struck a strong hit towards the left field. Excitement filled me as I thought, "Finally! My first base hit!" With my head focused downward, I swiftly ran towards first base. The spectators erupted into wild cheers, creating a frenzy of noise. However, as I lifted my gaze, I was taken aback to witness Garth Brooks making an incredible diving catch in left field, thereby prolonging my streak of not getting any hits in the game, as I was still at 0-4

The individuals present at the press conference were highly amused by this particular story.

The following day, I was set free from whatever situation I was in. I took some time to reflect and had a conversation with myself. I questioned why I was unable to achieve any successes or achievements. This self-reflection prompted me to raise my hands up high in the air, and surprisingly, it made a positive difference.

I hold Garth Brooks responsible for my terrible batting stance.

Brooks, who is widely regarded as one of the most prominent figures in the music industry, also had a passion for sports during his childhood. He actively participated in baseball and track and field events. Despite having three opportunities to join the New York Mets, he unfortunately did not succeed in securing a spot on the team.
