Garth Brooks’ Unlikely Influence: How He Made a MLB Hitter Change His Batting Stance

  • by

Garth Brooks, an accomplished country musician, had a significant impact on an MLB hitter's batting stance in the past. The current manager of the Chicago Cubs, Craig Counsell, had a successful career as a professional baseball player from 1995 to 2007.

Counsell became famous for his non-traditional way of holding the bat while batting. He would raise it high up in the air, leaving everyone curious about the reason behind his unusual stance. Surprisingly, Counsell never bothered to provide an explanation for it.

After Counsell was appointed as the manager of the Chicago Cubs, he participated in the 2024 Cubs Convention, where a curious individual finally inquired about the reason behind his practice of holding the bat at a high position in the air.

He holds Garth Brooks responsible for it.

Counsell clarifies that during his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers at spring training, he struggled as a hitter and was unable to achieve any successful hits.

During spring training, I successfully hit a powerful hit towards the left field. Excitedly, I thought to myself, "Finally, my first base hit!" Without wasting a moment, I put my head down and swiftly headed towards first base. The crowd erupted with utter enthusiasm and excitement. However, as I lifted my gaze, I was taken aback to witness Garth Brooks making an extraordinary diving catch in left field, thereby preventing me from breaking my current 0-4 streak.

The people attending the press conference found this story to be extremely funny.

The following day, I was set free. I had a conversation with myself, pondering why I was unable to achieve any successful hits. This contemplation led me to raise my hands high up in the air. Surprisingly, this action proved to be beneficial for me.

Therefore, I attribute a terrible batting stance to Garth Brooks.

Brooks, who is widely regarded as one of the most successful figures in the music industry, had a passion for sports during his younger years. He actively participated in baseball and track and field. Despite his efforts, he had three attempts to join the New York Mets but unfortunately, he was not selected to be part of the team.
