Garth Brooks, the country music star, had an influence on the batting stance of an MLB player in the past. Craig Counsell, who is currently the manager of the Chicago Cubs, had a successful career as a professional baseball player from 1995 to 2007.
Counsell had a reputation for having an unusual batting stance where he would raise his bat high up in the air. The reason behind his peculiar stance remained a mystery as he never provided an explanation for it.
After Counsell was appointed as the manager of the Chicago Cubs, he participated in the 2024 Cubs Convention. During the event, someone finally inquired about the reason behind his previous practice of holding the bat at a high position in the air.
He attributes the responsibility to Garth Brooks.
According to Counsell, during his time at spring training with the Los Angeles Dodgers, he admits to not being a proficient hitter as he was unable to successfully make any hits.
During spring training, I hit a powerful hit towards the left field. I felt thrilled as it was my first base hit. Excitedly, I lowered my head and sprinted towards first base. The crowd erupted into cheers and applause. However, when I looked up, I was astonished to see that Garth Brooks had unexpectedly made a remarkable diving catch in left field, preventing me from breaking my 0-4 streak.
The individuals present at the press conference found this narrative extremely amusing.
The day after, I was set free. I had a conversation with myself, wondering why I couldn't achieve any successful hits. This led me to raise my hands high up in the air. Surprisingly, it actually made a difference and helped improve my performance.
I attribute my terrible batting stance to Garth Brooks.
Brooks, who is renowned as one of the most prominent figures in the music industry, also had a passion for sports during his childhood. He actively participated in baseball and track and field events. Although he had three opportunities to join the New York Mets, he unfortunately didn't succeed in securing a spot on the team.
