How Garth Brooks’ Diving Catch Led to a MLB Hitter’s Unconventional Batting Stance

  • by

Garth Brooks, the famous country singer, had an influence on an MLB hitter's batting stance in the past. The current manager of the Chicago Cubs, Craig Counsell, had a notable career as a professional baseball player from 1995 to 2007.

Counsell gained a reputation for his unique and non-traditional batting stance where he held his bat high above in the air. The reasoning behind this stance remained a mystery to everyone, as he never provided an explanation for it.

After Counsell was appointed as the manager of the Chicago Cubs, he participated in the 2024 Cubs Convention, where an individual finally inquired about the reason behind his previous practice of holding the bat at a high position in the air.

He attributes the responsibility to Garth Brooks.

Counsell recounts his experience of being a mediocre hitter during his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers while attending their spring training. He struggled to make successful hits during this period.

During a spring training game, I smacked a powerful hit towards the left field. Excitedly, I thought to myself, "Finally! My first successful hit!" With determination, I lowered my head and swiftly sprinted towards first base. The crowd erupted into wild cheers, creating a frenzy of excitement. However, as I glanced up, I was met with a surprising sight. Garth Brooks, the renowned musician, had made a remarkable diving catch in left field, preventing me from breaking my streak of unsuccessful hits.

The attendees at the media briefing were thoroughly amused by this narrative.

The following day, I was set free. I engaged in some introspection and questioned myself, wondering why I wasn't achieving any successful outcomes. This caused me to raise my hands high up in the air, and surprisingly, it had a positive impact on my situation.

I attribute my poor batting stance to Garth Brooks.

Brooks, a renowned figure in the music industry, possessed athletic talents during his early years. Engaging in activities like baseball and track and field, he even attempted to join the New York Mets on three separate occasions, although he was ultimately unable to secure a spot on the team.
