How Garth Brooks’ Diving Catch Led to Craig Counsell’s Unconventional Batting Stance

  • by

Garth Brooks once had an influence on an MLB hitter's batting stance, causing him to make a change. The recently appointed manager of the Chicago Cubs, Craig Counsell, had a successful career as a professional baseball player from 1995 to 2007.

Counsell gained notoriety for his unique way of holding the bat while batting. He would raise it high up in the air, leaving everyone puzzled as to the reason behind this unconventional stance. Interestingly, he never offered any explanation for it either.

After being appointed as the manager of the Chicago Cubs, Counsell participated in the 2024 Cubs Convention, during which he was questioned about the reason behind his previous habit of holding the bat at a high position in the air.

He attributes the responsibility to Garth Brooks.

Counsell clarifies that during his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers at spring training, he struggled as a hitter and was unable to achieve any hits.

During spring training, I hit a strong hit towards the left field. I was thrilled because it was my first hit of the season. Excitedly, I lowered my head and began sprinting towards first base. The crowd erupted with excitement and cheers. However, as I glanced up, I was taken aback to see Garth Brooks unexpectedly diving to make an incredible catch in the left field. Unfortunately, this impressive play extended my streak of not getting a hit to 0-4.

Those present at the press conference found this story to be extremely amusing.

The following day, I was set free. I engaged in a conversation with myself, questioning why I was unable to achieve any successful hits. This internal dialogue ultimately prompted me to raise my hands up high in the air. Surprisingly, this action proved to be beneficial and improved my performance.

Brooks, who is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the music industry, had a passion for sports during his childhood and actively participated in baseball and track and field. Despite having three opportunities to join the New York Mets, he unfortunately did not succeed in securing a spot in the team.
