PETA Advocates for Giant Coin to Replace Punxsutawney Phil, Citing Exploitation

  • by

PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the United States every year. Instead of using Phil, PETA suggests using a giant coin for this purpose.

The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, who is the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin on Groundhog Day, which occurs on February 2nd.

PETA expressed that the individual in question is not a meteorologist and should not be continually used for financial gain through tourism.

PETA approached the club in 2022, suggesting that they should contemplate using a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.

According to PETA president Ingrid Newkirk, Phil excels in digging, searching for food, and leading a natural life, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.

According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by allowing Phil and his friend to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. This way, Phil can live without any concerns and not experience being handled and spun around, which goes against his natural behavior that is currently restricted in his Plexiglas enclosure.

For over a century, people from the town and visitors from various places have been coming to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness the emergence of a small and furry creature named Phil. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it will indicate either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.

The film Groundhog Day, which features Bill Murray as a weatherman who is unhappy with his job and trapped in a repetitive time cycle, was brought to audiences in 1993.
