The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is advocating for Punxsutawney Phil to step down from his longstanding role of predicting the weather in the United States. Instead, they propose the use of a giant coin for this purpose.
The animal rights group has written a letter to the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, Tom Dunkel, asking them to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.
PETA expressed their concern, stating that he is not a professional in meteorology and should not be used solely for generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the use of a persimmon tree for weather prediction instead of relying on Phil.
"Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in the field of meteorology."
According to Newkirk, PETA is aiming to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration. They are advocating for Phil and his companion to be relocated to a credible sanctuary, where they can live free from concerns, without being handled and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in their natural behaviors that are currently restricted in their Plexiglas enclosure.
For over a century, people from the local community and visitors from various places have been coming to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness the annual tradition of observing Phil, a small and furry creature, come out of his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it is believed to predict either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
In 1993, a film called Groundhog Day was released. The movie features Bill Murray playing the role of a weatherman who is unhappy and trapped in a recurring time period.
