PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the United States. They propose replacing him with a giant coin.
An animal rights group has written a letter to the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, Tom Dunkel, asking the club to replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin for the celebration of Groundhog Day on February 2nd.
PETA expressed the viewpoint that he is not a professional meteorologist and should not be used solely for the purpose of generating tourism revenue, as he deserves to be treated with more respect.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they should use a persimmon tree to forecast the weather instead of relying on Phil.
According to Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, Phil is skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and living in harmony with nature. However, he is not an expert in predicting weather conditions.
According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd tradition. They are advocating for Phil and his companion to be sent to a trustworthy sanctuary, where they can live without fear and without being handled roughly. This would allow them to engage in their natural behaviors, which they are currently unable to do in their Plexiglas enclosure.
For over a century, people from both the local community and visitors from various places have journeyed to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. They gather there to witness the annual tradition of Phil, a small and furry animal, coming out of his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it will indicate whether there will be six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
The film Groundhog Day, which was released in 1993, features Bill Murray in the role of a frustrated weatherman who finds himself trapped in a repeating cycle of time.
