PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for his annual role in predicting the weather in the United States. Additionally, PETA suggests replacing him with a giant coin.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the popular groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the individual mentioned is not a professional in the field of meteorology and should not be continuously used solely for the purpose of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they use a persimmon tree to forecast the weather instead of relying on Phil.
"At the time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is proficient in digging tunnels, searching for food, and embracing the natural way of life, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology."
Newkirk from PETA expressed their desire to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd. They are advocating for Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. This way, Phil can live without stress and without experiencing the unsettling practice of being lifted and spun around. He would also be able to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure.
Since 1887, people from both the local area and other places have been going to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the event where a small animal named Phil comes out of its temporary shelter. Based on whether Phil sees its shadow or not, it indicates if there will be six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
