PETA Advocates for Retirement of Punxsutawney Phil and Replacement with Giant Coin

PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the U.S. annually. They propose replacing him with a giant coin.

The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the popular groundhog with a large coin for the celebration of Groundhog Day on February 2nd.

PETA expressed that he doesn't have expertise in meteorology and it is unfair to continuously use him for generating tourism revenue.

According to PETA president Ingrid Newkirk, Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.

PETA is aiming to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by advocating for Phil and his companion to be transferred to a trustworthy sanctuary. In this sanctuary, Phil can live free from concern, without being handled and spun around, and finally be able to engage in the natural behaviors that have been denied to him in his current Plexiglas enclosure, according to Newkirk.
