PETA Advocates for Retirement of Punxsutawney Phil and Replacement with Giant Coin

  • by

PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the famous groundhog who annually predicts the weather in the United States. They propose replacing him with a giant coin.

The contentious animal rights organization has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, who is the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. In the letter, they have asked the club to substitute the renowned groundhog with a massive coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.

PETA expressed that the person in question is not a trained weather expert and should not be continuously used solely for financial gains in the tourism industry.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the use of a persimmon tree for weather predictions instead of relying on Phil.

During that period, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is well-versed in activities like burrowing, foraging, and living according to his natural instincts rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.

According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration. They aim to send Phil and his companion to a trustworthy sanctuary, where they can live free from stress and not be subjected to being handled and spun around. In this sanctuary, Phil will have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure.

For over a century, people from both the local community and visitors from distant places have been coming to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. They gather to witness the emergence of Phil, a small and furry creature, from his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it is believed to indicate either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.

In 1993, a film called Groundhog Day was released featuring Bill Murray as a weatherman who is unhappy with his job and gets trapped in a repeating cycle of time.
