PETA is advocating for Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog who predicts the weather in the U.S., to step down from his role, claiming that he is being exploited. As an alternative, PETA suggests using a giant coin for the weather prediction tradition.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the individual in question is not a professional in meteorology and should not be taken advantage of annually for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

In the year 2022, PETA made a request to the club, suggesting they use a persimmon tree instead of Phil to forecast the weather.
At the time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, mentioned that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and leading a life in alignment with his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable about meteorology.
PETA is aiming to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd and allowing Phil (along with his companion) to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. This way, he can live without any concerns, without being handled and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in the natural behaviors that he has been deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure, stated Newkirk.
For over a century, people from near and far have been coming to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness the annual event of Phil, a small furry creature, coming out of his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether he sees his shadow or not, this event predicts either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
Released in 1993, Groundhog Day is a film featuring Bill Murray in the role of a weatherman who is frustrated and trapped in a never-ending cycle of time.
