PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, who has been annually predicting the weather in the United States. They propose replacing him with a giant coin.
A group advocating for animal rights has written a letter to the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, Tom Dunkel, asking the club to substitute the famous groundhog with a large coin for the celebration of Groundhog Day on February 2nd.
According to PETA, the individual mentioned in the statement is not a professional in the field of meteorology. PETA believes that this person should not be taken advantage of annually for the sole purpose

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they should use a persimmon tree as an alternative to Phil for predicting the weather.
"Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is highly skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living in harmony with nature, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology."
PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration by advocating for Phil (and his companion) to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. This sanctuary would provide Phil with a worry-free life, free from the stress of being handled and spun around, allowing him to engage in natural behaviors that he has been deprived of in his current Plexiglas enclosure, according to Newkirk.
Since 1887, people from both the local community and visitors from different places have been coming to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the annual event of Phil, a small furry animal, emerging from his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether or not Phil sees his shadow, it can indicate either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
