PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the U.S. every year. They propose replacing him with a giant coin.

The animal rights group has written a letter to the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, Tom Dunkel, asking them to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the celebration of Groundhog Day on February 2nd.

During that time, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk expressed that Phil is skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable about weather patterns.

PETA is advocating for the groundhog club to start February 2nd in a more compassionate way by allowing Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. This would provide Phil with the opportunity to live without fear, without being handled and spun around, and to engage in his natural behavior that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure, as stated by Newkirk.

Since 1887, people from both the local community and visitors from various places have made their way to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness the emergence of Phil, a small furry creature, from his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it indicates either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
