PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the U.S. every year. Instead, they propose replacing him with a giant coin.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin on Groundhog Day, which is celebrated on February 2nd.
According to PETA, the person in question is not a professional in the field of meteorology and it is unfair to continuously use them solely for the purpose of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the use of a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.
During that time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.
Newkirk from PETA expressed their desire to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration. They hope to relocate Phil and his companion to a trustworthy sanctuary, where they can live free from concerns and avoid being handled and spun around. In this sanctuary, Phil can engage in natural behaviors that he has been deprived of in his current Plexiglas enclosure.
For over a century, people from both the local area and other places have been coming to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness the annual event of Phil, a small furry animal, coming out of his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it indicates whether there will be six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
The film Groundhog Day, which features Bill Murray in the role of an unhappy weatherman trapped in a repeating time cycle, was made available to the public in 1993.
