PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the United States every year. Instead, PETA suggests that a giant coin should replace Phil's role.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin for the celebration of Groundhog Day on February 2nd.
PETA expressed their concern that he is not an expert in weather forecasting and should not be continually used for financial gain in the tourism industry.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they should use a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.
According to PETA president Ingrid Newkirk, Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living in the natural way he was meant to, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.
According to Newkirk from PETA, they are aiming to support the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration. They want Phil and his companion to be sent to a trustworthy sanctuary, where they can live without any concerns. In this sanctuary, they won't be held and spun around, allowing them to engage in their natural behaviors that they have been deprived of in their current Plexiglas enclosure.
For over a century, people from the nearby areas and visitors from all over have made their way to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness an annual event. They gather to observe a small and furry creature named Phil as he leaves his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether he sees his shadow or not, it is believed to predict either six additional weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
