PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather annually in the United States. They propose replacing him with a giant coin for the event.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, expressing their desire for the club to substitute the well-known groundhog with a large coin on Groundhog Day, celebrated on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the individual referred to is not a professional meteorologist and should not be taken advantage of solely for the sake of generating tourist revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the use of a persimmon tree for weather prediction instead of relying on Phil.
At that moment, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk stated that Phil is knowledgeable and skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living in the natural way he was meant to, but not in the field of meteorology.
PETA aims to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by advocating for Phil and his companion to be relocated to a reputable sanctuary. In this sanctuary, Phil can live without any concerns, free from being handled and spun around, and be able to engage in natural behaviors that are currently denied to him in his Plexiglas enclosure.
For over a century, people from both the local community and visitors from different places have been making their way to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Their purpose is to witness the emergence of a small, furry creature named Phil from his temporary abode. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it will indicate either six more weeks of winter or the arrival of an early spring.
The film Groundhog Day, which features Bill Murray as an unhappy meteorologist trapped in a repeated time cycle, came out in 1993.
