PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the U.S. every year. PETA suggests replacing him with a giant coin.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the traditional groundhog with a big coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.
PETA expressed their dismay by stating that he lacks the expertise of a meteorologist and should not be continuously used for the sole purpose of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they replace Phil with a persimmon tree to forecast the weather.
During that time, Ingrid Newkirk, president of PETA, stated that Phil is highly skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and leading a life that aligns with his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable about weather patterns.
According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration. They are advocating for Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary, where they can live without any concerns and without being subjected to being lifted and spun around. This would allow them to engage in their natural behaviors, which they are currently deprived of in their Plexiglas enclosure.
For over a century, people from both the local area and other places have been coming to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness the annual event where a small animal named Phil comes out of its temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees its shadow or not, it determines if there will be six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
The film "Groundhog Day" came out in 1993 and features Bill Murray playing the role of a weatherman who is frustrated and trapped in a repetitive cycle of time.
