PETA Calls for Retirement of Punxsutawney Phil and Replacement with Giant Coin

PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the U.S. every year. They propose replacing him with a large coin instead.

The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.

PETA expressed their opinion that he should not be used solely for generating tourism revenue since he is not a meteorologist and deserves better treatment.

PETA approached the club in 2022 with a suggestion to replace Phil, the current weather predictor, with a persimmon tree.

"At the time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, expressed that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and leading a life that aligns with his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology."

According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd tradition. They are advocating for Phil and his companion to be relocated to a reputable sanctuary, where they can live without fear and without being handled and spun around. This will allow them to engage in natural behaviors that they have been deprived of in their current Plexiglas enclosure.
