The animal rights organization PETA is advocating for Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather, to step down from his role and be replaced with a giant coin.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the celebration of Groundhog Day on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person mentioned is not a meteorologist and should not be used solely for the purpose of generating tourism revenue.

PETA approached the club in 2022 and suggested the idea of using a persimmon tree as an alternative to Phil for predicting the weather.
At the time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is knowledgeable in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than being an expert in meteorology.
Newkirk from PETA expressed their desire for the groundhog club to start February 2nd on a more compassionate note. They want Phil and his companion to be sent to a trustworthy sanctuary where they can live without any concerns. This sanctuary would allow Phil to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure, and he would no longer be subjected to being picked up and spun around.
For over a century, people from the local community and visitors from various places have been making their way to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. They gather to witness the emergence of Phil, a small furry creature, from his temporary dwelling. Phil's appearance either indicates the presence of his shadow, suggesting six additional weeks of winter, or the absence of his shadow, indicating an early arrival of spring.
