PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for his annual weather predictions in the United States. They propose replacing Phil with a giant coin for this tradition.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person mentioned is not a meteorologist and should not be taken advantage of every year for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA approached the club in 2022 and suggested the idea of using a persimmon tree as a weather predictor rather than relying on Phil.
"At the time, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk stated that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology."
According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration by allowing Phil and his companion to be transferred to a reputable sanctuary. In this sanctuary, Phil can live without any concerns, without being handled roughly or spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure.
Since 1887, people from both the local area and visitors from different places have been going to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the emergence of Phil, a small furry animal, from his temporary dwelling. Based on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it predicts either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
