PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for his yearly weather predictions in the United States. PETA suggests replacing him with a giant coin instead.
The animal rights group has written a letter to the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, Tom Dunkel, asking them to replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.
PETA expressed their concern by stating that the individual in question is not a professional meteorologist and should not be taken advantage of annually for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA approached the club in 2022 and suggested the idea of using a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.
According to PETA president Ingrid Newkirk, Phil is skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts rather than having knowledge about weather patterns.
Newkirk from PETA expressed their desire to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd. They aim to relocate Phil, along with his companion, to a trustworthy sanctuary. This would allow Phil to live a worry-free life, free from being handled and spun around, and enable him to engage in natural behaviors that are currently denied to him in his Plexiglas enclosure.
For over a century, people from both the local community and visitors from different places have been going to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the emergence of Phil, a small and furry creature, from his temporary dwelling. This event determines whether Phil sees his shadow, indicating that there will be six additional weeks of winter, or if he doesn't see anything, suggesting an early arrival of spring.
