PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the United States. Instead, they propose the use of a large coin for this purpose.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, expressing their desire for the club to replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin on Groundhog Day, occurring on February 2nd.
According to PETA's statement, the person mentioned in the text is not a meteorologist and should not be taken advantage of every year just for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they should use a persimmon tree as an alternative to Phil for predicting the weather.
Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable about weather patterns.
According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration by allowing Phil and his partner to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. In this sanctuary, Phil can live without any concerns, without being handled and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that he has been deprived of in his current Plexiglas enclosure.
For over a century, people from both the local community and visitors from different places have been making their way to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. They gather there to witness the emergence of Phil, a small and furry creature, from his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it will indicate whether there will be six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
In 1993, a film called Groundhog Day was released, featuring Bill Murray as a weatherman who is unhappy with his job and finds himself trapped in a repetitive time cycle.
