PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for his yearly weather predictions in the United States.
A group advocating for animal rights has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. They are suggesting that instead of using a groundhog, the club should use a large coin to commemorate Groundhog Day on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that he is not an expert in meteorology and should not be taken advantage of annually for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA approached the club in 2022 and suggested the idea of using a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.
During that period, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk stated that Phil is highly skilled in digging, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts rather than having expertise in meteorology.
According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration by allowing Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. In this sanctuary, Phil can live without any concerns, without being handled and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that are currently being denied to him in his Plexiglas enclosure.
Since 1887, people from both the local community and visitors from different places have been coming to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness the emergence of Phil, a small furry creature, from his temporary residence. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it indicates either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
