PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the U.S. every year. They propose replacing him with a giant coin.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, expressing their desire for a change in the way the Groundhog Day holiday is celebrated. They are proposing to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the event, which occurs on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person being referred to is not a meteorologist and should not be taken advantage of every year for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they replace Phil with a persimmon tree as a means to forecast the weather.
"At the time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is highly skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and embracing the natural lifestyle he was meant to have, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology."
Newkirk from PETA expressed their desire to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration by urging them to release Phil and his companion to a reputable sanctuary. This would allow Phil to live without fear, free from being handled and spun around, and give him the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure.
Since 1887, people from both the Punxsutawney area and visitors from other places have been coming to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness the annual event of Phil the groundhog emerging from his temporary shelter. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it indicates either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
Released in 1993, Groundhog Day is a film that features Bill Murray in the role of a weatherman who is frustrated and trapped in a never-ending cycle of time.
