PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog traditionally responsible for predicting the weather in the United States. Instead, they propose using a giant coin as a replacement.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to substitute the well-known groundhog with a large coin on Groundhog Day, observed on February 2nd.
PETA expressed their concern that he should not be taken advantage of annually for financial gain in the tourism industry, especially considering that he is not a professional meteorologist.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they replace Phil with a persimmon tree to forecast the weather.
According to PETA president Ingrid Newkirk, Phil is skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable about weather patterns.
According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd tradition. They are advocating for Phil and his companion to be relocated to a reputable sanctuary. In this sanctuary, Phil can live without any concerns, without being handled and spun around, and engage in the natural behaviors that are currently restricted in his Plexiglas enclosure.
Since 1887, people from both the local community and visitors from various places have journeyed to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the emergence of Phil, a small and furry creature, from his temporary residence. The purpose of this spectacle is to determine whether Phil's shadow is visible or not, which signifies either six additional weeks of winter or the arrival of an early spring season.
