PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the United States every year. Additionally, PETA suggests replacing Phil with a giant coin for the annual event.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to substitute the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the celebration of Groundhog Day on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that he doesn't have expertise in meteorology and should not be taken advantage of every year for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA suggested to the club in 2022 that they should contemplate using a persimmon tree as a means of weather prediction, instead of relying on Phil.
According to PETA president Ingrid Newkirk, Phil is highly skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.
PETA is aiming to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by advocating for Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. This would provide Phil with a life free from concerns, where he won't be handled and spun around, and can engage in the natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure, explained Newkirk.
For over a century, residents and visitors from various places have journeyed to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness the emergence of a cute creature named Phil from his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it indicates either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
